Persepolis Research – Marjane Satrapi Notations: 1. Satrapi was born in Tehran, Iran (the nation’s capital) in the year 1969. The time in which Satrapi was born is critical to the events in her life due to the political turmoil that was occurring in her country. In 1979, at the age of 10, Satrapi witness firsthand the persecution and horrific consequences of the Islamic Revolution. The Islamic Revolution occurred due to the growing opposition lead by Ayatollah Khomeini against Mohammad Reza Shah and his secret police known as the Savak. The radical regime of shah gained support during this time, and hundreds of people were executed as a result. Soon after, Khomeini was able to declare an Islamic republic that reflected his ideals after an incredibly biased national referendum. As the interviews were written, I did not spend a great amount of time with the interviewees regarding the interviews, but I know each personally and was easily available if they had any questions or were unsure of the meaning of a question. I decided to conduct the interviews on paper because some of the questions could be considered difficult and I wanted the participant to have the time to think their answers through carefully and thoroughly. In conducting this project, my main goal was to discover the general opinion of the influence that parents have on their children, the effects that different parenting styles have on a child’s development, and how the influence and parenting styles could be good and bad. I expected the answers to all be somewhat similar, as I believed the participants’ opinions on good and bad parenting to close to one another. The differences in opinions that I looked for in their answers, I expected all to be based on their age and gender. The adult participants all have children of their own, so I expected theirs answers would reflect their experience just as I expected the adolescents’ (who are both childless) answers to reflect only what they believe to be true. Likewise, I expected the differences between the opinions of the opposite genders to reflect the differences between mothering and fathering parenting roles and styles. Adolescent Interviews When reading the answers given by my adolescent interviewees, I had to keep in mind where they were in terms of cognitive and social development. According to developmentalist and psychoanalyst Erik Erikson, appropriate social and emotional development in adolescence requires solving the major challenge of ego-identity versus role diffusion. To resolve this challenge, adolescents must form an ego-identity, a strong sense of â€Å"who I am and what I stand for†, or they may suffer role diffusion (running from activity to activity), with a higher chance of them succumbing peer pressure. The premier adolescent interview I will be discussing is by the female (ladies first! . Overall, she, who requested that her pseudonym simply and humorously be So’n’So, believed that though parents aren’t always the best teacher, they are most definitely the most influential. At the same time So’n’So often stressed the fact that, sometimes even in spite of the parents and their influence, â€Å"there will be instances when the child has their own personality, values, and beliefs. † A way in which p arents often exceedingly purposefully try to influence their children is when passing down values. So’n’So declared that parents should make sure to pass down some values, such as what they believe to be right and wrong, but the children will otherwise â€Å"be able to hold their own values†. Another way parents can influence their children, often without being aware of doing so, is through their own habits and self-talk. So’n’So stated that, â€Å"positive habits and self-talk can and will show their child how to view and show themselves independently†¦.. and a parent’s negative habits and self-talk may end up sending their child’s self-judgment downhill. Parents also often attempt to direct their young children into acting like their gender should. On this subject, So’n’So said that gender stereotyping can be both a good and a bad influence on the child. â€Å"It affects the child positively by allowing the child to see how their gender should act. Negatively, it can cause the child to not be who they really a re. † She said that parents need to be aware of their own self-esteem and make sure to handle their negative habits when they are in front of their children. When answering questions about the different parenting styles, she said that a constructive but firm parent (in other words, an authoritative parent) had a much better effect on the child than a deleterious and punitive parent (in other words, an authoritarian parent). So’n’So said that â€Å"A compassionate and concerned parent will, for the most part, affect the child positively in their emotional and social development† and â€Å"An unconcerned and passive parent will most likely have children†¦. that often turn to poor habits†. However, she again strained her opinion that the child’s unique personality can often affect the extent to which a parent can influence their child’s behavior and development. She considers a parent that shows too much concern for their child hindering to the child’s development. When asked how much compassion and concern is ideal for the development of the child, she stated, â€Å"No care leaves a child feeling alone and neglected, but too much has the child wanting escape from their parents control. † Aside from being somewhat more blunt and assertive in answering the questions, the male adolescent interviewee (who said I just call him Han Solo for this report) had very similar answers to So’n’So. When discussing how parents influence their children, Han also said that the kids should have certain values that are their own, â€Å"values that they believe because they accept it, not because they were forced to believe it. † But if it concerns values like â€Å"treat others how you want to be treated, then I think they should be passed down. When discussing how parents try to influence how the child should act based on their gender, Han bluntly said, contrary to So’n’So, that he thinks â€Å"nature pretty well takes care of that on its own. Boys stand. Girls sit. Boys prefer to roughhouse and play with cars, while girls prefer to play dress-up and play with dolls. † Han recognized that there are exceptions, but didn’t see how the par ent could make the child act in a way that wasn’t natural for them. He also adamantly encouraged parents to practice positive self-esteem and habits, at least when in front of their child. He thought that the parent’s self-confidence would have a huge impact on the child’s later self-confidence. He thought it made sense that if the parent didn’t believe in themselves, then they wouldn’t encourage the child and, therefore, the child would end up having low self-confidence later in life. Similarly, he thought that a confident parent would be encouraging and their child would end up having a lot of self-confidence. When answering questions about different parenting styles, he basically had the same answers as So’n’So, saying that a concerned and compassionate parent will affect the child in a positive way and an unconcerned and passive parent will affect the child in a negative way. In other words, he said agreed that, overall, an authoritative parent would be the most beneficial to a child. He said that his ideal level of concern for the child would be â€Å"total concern because it’s MY child. † He believes that kids learn a lot from their parents. He believes that kids learn what is ok behavior from watching their parents and their habits. To finish off the interview, Han made this interesting statement: â€Å"Think of kids growing up as like a lump of dough. How they are cooked and everything will determine how well they come out. Upbringing is everything. † Middle Adult Interviews While interviewing middle-aged adults, I had to keep in mind where they were in their emotional, social, and cognitive development. Erik Erikson stated that the primary psychosocial task of middle adulthood is to develop generativity, or the desire to expand one’s influence and commitment to family, society, and future generations. The middle-aged adult who fails to develop generativity experiences stagnation, or self-absorption, with its associated self-indulgence and invalidism. Other influential issues that middle-aged adults run into are adjusting to physiological changes, reaching and maintaining satisfaction in one’ s occupation, helping teenage children to become responsible adults, achieving adult social and civil responsibility, relating to one’s spouse as a person, and developing leisure-time activities. Like I expected, it was immediately obvious that the middle-aged adults had more experience with parenting than the adolescents. The female middle adult, whose pseudonym will be Michelle, gave her experienced opinion on how parents influence their children, as well as how different teaching styles affect children. I know for a fact that, not only is she a parent herself, but she also has experience working with children in a daycare setting. When answering the questions, she often included her own experiences, explaining how she sometimes did things, what her mindset was when with children, and even how she would do things differently if she could. When inquired about how parents should pass on their values to their children, she replied, â€Å"Even though parents are usually eager to pass their values on to their children, parents make mistakes and do not always live as the example that they would wish for their children to follow. She then interjected her personal experience, saying that, â€Å"I’ve always expected complete and immediate obedience and respect from my children, but I have always understood that my children are individuals and that they are ultimately responsible for their own belief system and daily choices. † In saying this, Michelle pretty well agreed with what the adolescents believed about parents influencing their kids’ values. She then went on to answer the questions about ho w the parent’s own self-esteem and habits can influence the child. Michelle said that, â€Å"A parent with confidence will be a better decision maker and will be more apt to take chances and accomplish more in life†¦Having a positive attitude can help to make many things in life bearable and even more pleasurable. † She then said, â€Å"A parent with low confidence will probably not get out much and won’t take chances or be very successful in life†¦That parent will probably not encourage or challenge their children to be better either. † She then made an overall statement, declaring that, â€Å"Children learn everything from their parents. Michelle believes, when it comes to different parenting styles, that a stern but compassionate parent has the best effect on a child. She says that she â€Å"believes in correcting her children so they know what they’ve done wrong†¦I want my children to make healthy choices but I also realize that making mistakes is the best way to learn†¦along with compassion can go a long way to helping my children to accept responsibility for their mistakes and to hopefully make better ones in the future. † She also said that this correction and compassion can go a long way when it comes to discipline. Again, she explains how learning from mistakes is the most important aspect of disciplining acts of disobedience. Her general statement regarding how parents influence their children was, â€Å"They learn what is acceptable and they form a view of what life is supposed to be like through the relationship and behavior from their parents. † The middle-aged male adult, who said for his pseudonym to be Charles, puts emphasis on the importance on both the influence of the parents on the child and the independence of the child. He doesn’t mention his experience outright in his answers, but he informed me beforehand that his opinions would be greatly influenced by his experiences as a father. â€Å"Parents have such a strong influence that even though children can understand that their parents may not always be right about decisions and lifestyles that they choose, it still sets the standard for what seems acceptable. † Charles accepts as truth the idea that the child will be influenced by the parent no matter what. Because of this, he believes it is important for parents to establish independence and self-confidence in their children. He says that this can be accomplished by â€Å"helping to direct a child in an appropriate and loving way†¦parents can establish good self-esteem in their children by having a positive attitude themselves. Being positive can naturally rub off on children and help them to develop healthy and positive thoughts and actions. † Likewise, a parent who has a negative attitude will also rub off on their children, passing down negative and self-destructive thoughts and actions. Also, Charles talks about how parenting styles can have a big effect on a child’s self-worth and confidence. â€Å"Parents who express concern and compassion for their children†¦encourage their children to excel and help to build their self-worth and self-esteem. † Similarly, â€Å"when parents are passive and do not express an interest in their child’s life this can cause the child to lose interest in trying new things or in trying to succeed†¦it can lower their self-esteem, confidence, and feelings of self-worth. He thinks the ideal level of attachment, which allows independence and parental influence, â€Å"should be one that consists of a balance between being observant and compassionate and allowing the child to experiment and build their independence and abilities with direction and advice without being controlling or instilling fear in a child for wanting to try new things. † Another way this can be instilled, Charles believes, is through correct discipline. â€Å"A child who learns to behave in social situations is one who has had consistent and loving direction, discipline, and boundaries and who has had to learn self-control and obedience. He states that the key to a well-behaved child is a parent who will teach their child what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior and who disciplines their child for unacceptable behavior. Charles also believes that a great way for a child to learn is by watching how their parents handle situations and how they manage under stress. â€Å"A child can learn patience and can learn to become an effective problem-solver from watching their parents handle stress the right way. Charles says that the right ways for parents to handle stress in front of their children is by talking and calmly solve problems without making it difficult on their children or others around them. † Late Adulthood Interviews When reading the answers given by the interviewees in late adulthood, I had to keep in mind where t hey were on their emotional, social, and cognitive development. Erik Erikson suggests that at this time it is important to find meaning and satisfaction in life rather than to become bitter and disillusioned, that is, to resolve the conflict of integrity versus despair. A stereotype about elder generations that is widely believed is that intellectual changes result in reduction of ability. This isn’t necessarily true. While fluid intelligence (the ability to see and use patterns and relationships to solve problems) does decline in the later years, crystallized intelligence (the ability to use accumulated information to solve problems and make decisions) has been shown to stay the same and, in some cases, even rise slightly. The two interviewees that were in later adulthood used their experience as both parents and grandparents. They’ve not only experienced parenting themselves, but they’ve had their children grow up, move out, and be parents themselves. Even so, there were a lot of similarities in the answers given by the elder adults and the middle-aged adults. The elder female interviewee, whose pseudonym shall be Debbie, agreed that children won’t always have the same values that they’re parents do. But, she also agrees, that children will tend to value many things that their parents do. In order for a parent to establish good self-esteem in their children, Debbie believes that parents should â€Å"practice positive behavior, praising their kids for positive behavior, and by providing a loving and understanding environment. † A parent’s negative self-talk and low self-esteem can â€Å"promote destructive habits† and a parent’s positive self-talk and high self-esteem â€Å"provides a good role model for the child†. Overall, Debbie concluded that â€Å"children are heavily influenced by their parents. Positive influence can create children who have integrity while negative influence can create children who have utter disregard for others. † Debbie also had similar views on how different parenting styles can affect children. She believed that how a child treats their other relationships often mirrors how the parent treats the child. She said that a parent who shows concern and compassion for the child will result in â€Å"a child that learns from their parents and thus incorporates concern and compassion into their relationships. In the same way, an unconcerned and passive parent will teach their children to be aggressive and unconcerned towards other people they encounter. She also made a point to state how lack of discipline can affect a child: â€Å"Children will have no self-discipline and lack accountability. † Debbie continued and said that two other very important aspects in parental influence are focusing on education and learning how to set goals. The male in his later years of adulthood, when asked what I should call him in my report, he jokingly said that he would like to be referred to as Geezer. He was thrilled when I told him that I actually would be allowed to do so if he didn’t mind, so that’s what his pseudonym shall be for the purpose of this report. When inquired about children taking their parents values as their own, he said that â€Å"it would be shame on me if didn’t receive my values, which include respecting others and working hard to achieve your goals, but for children whose parents have values such as take what you can get and live off the benefit system, it would be much better if the children wouldn’t believe what their parents do. Geezer then makes his statement on how a parent’s self-esteem affects the child and their self-esteem. He starts by putting his own definition to the word ‘self-esteem’: â€Å"Self-esteem comes from knowing that you can do things accurately, successfully, and independently. † He believes that the best way to build a child’s self-esteem comes from reward systems, which make the child realize the span of their own capabilities. â€Å"One understanding that I have thought of as useful, from dealing with my children and other youngsters of the family, is that istakes are meant to be learned from. † He then goes on to explain how he believes a parent’s own habits and self-esteem can affect the child. He says that the effect on the child depends on the level of concern and compassion the child is exposed to. â€Å"For instance, if a parent is so compassionate that they never want to see their child cry. The child gets what the child wants because it breaks the parent’s heart to see the child ‘suffer’ even the slightest bit. † He then adds his personal experience: â€Å"For me, it was a constant balancing act. I was constantly weighing out how much or how little to show, because every situation was different. If I didn’t get the balance right, chances of something affecting my child’s development negatively rises. † Discussion When looking at the answers of all of the interviewees ‘answers side-by-side, the different age groups gave very similar answers. They all agree that children will have their own values, no matter what. At the same time, parental influence is inescapable. They all agree that compassion and concern are, if not taken too far, are much more beneficial to the child than disregard and passiveness. They all agree that failure to discipline unacceptable behavior affects the child negatively and that behavior should be explained, so that the child understands why certain behavior is either acceptable or unacceptable. They all agree that parents should monitor their own self-esteem and habits when on front of the children, as negative self-esteem can give the child low confidence levels. The main differences in their answers seem to originate from level of real-world experience. The adolescents weren’t able to incorporate as much experience as the adults, so their answers weren’t as detailed and opinionated. Differences also stemmed from the participant’s stage of development, stages that Erik Erikson explained. These stages helped me to understand the three different age groups and what their mindsets were when answering my questions. Everything they said went along with what the theories in the book. The only way I really tried to ensure honesty in my interviews was by interviewing people I am personally familiar with. When choosing participants, I chose people that I know for a fact would tell the truth. Anyway, I am already familiar with them and their opinions, so if they were to say something they didn’t believe, I’d like to think that I would know. I also gave the interviews on paper, so that the recipients would have time to think through their answers. I wouldn’t want them to say something they didn’t think through or have them leave out information because they didn’t have a chance to think it through. The most difficult part of this project was trying to come up with effective questions to ask my interviewees. I wanted questions that would altogether go to show the general opinion on how parents influence their children. After that, getting the interviews completed was simple, as they were written and didn’t require much time, and the report came together very quickly and rather nicely, I think. Overall, I learned exactly what I expected to learn. I discovered the general opinion of the influence that parents have on their children, the effects that different parenting styles have on a child’s development, and how the influence and parenting styles could be good and bad. Like I stated before, most major opinions were shared and the only differences in answers were due to age and experience variances. Upon completing this report, I realize that it has helped me to understand my parents and grandparents and reasons why they raised us kids the way that they did. The most important things that I’ve learned through this project though, are things that I will be able to use when I become a mother, a teacher, and, eventually (and hopefully), a grandmother.

But for those who want to take part in the discussion, you can directly join us on the hangout! Hi Stewart, thanks for joining me on this hangout. First, can you give me a bit of background on how you became a freelance book designer?I started out in the publishing world working in magazines and newspapers, and was primarily art directing for various publications in Seattle for quite a long time. I worked for a number of newspapers, however I really wanted to work with books, because I’ve always loved reading and I’ve loved books since I was a little kid. I always thought that the publishing industry was fascinating and that what cover designers did was really the kind of thing I wanted to do as a graphic designer.Whilst I was working for newspapers I started to get jobs here and there with publishers and I didn’t turn down anything. I knew that every job that I could do was something I could add on to my portfolio, to help me get bigger and bigger clients as I moved along. After a brief period of travel, Sasquatch books hired me as a senior designer and I stayed there for a few years. I finally ended up in New York City where I couldn’t find any work at all, so I just decided to go do business for myself.I started to build a presence using all the contacts I had acquired, and I knew at that time that it was really important for me to work on my online presence, so I was always doing online portfolios. I can’t remember the last time I showed anybody a physical portfolio, nobody really uses those anymore. I was already making websites back in the early 1990s, and those have really helped because I really don’t know where people find my work, so I try to put it everywhere.I really like the fact that you put all your work out there, on different platforms. I’ve checked your blog and you’re one of the few cover designers I’ve seen at Reedsy who posts all the projects they’re doing, including information about the creative process and previous cover versions. I think too few designers do tha t.I’ve noticed that as well and I don’t know why that is. I think sometimes it has to do with this idea that when people sign up for a portfolio and are asking for a description, if you have 25 covers it can seem a little daunting to write 25 descriptions at once. For me it was always important to do it as I went along so this wouldn’t happen.Also, I think people run out of things to say, or they are trying to really let the work speak for themselves. But for my clients, people ask me specific questions, like â€Å"do you do YA?† or â€Å"how many covers do you do?†, and I think that the explanations that I give really demystify what is going on on my end so the people get a better idea of how the process works. The blog really helps me illustrate that for them rather than just do some magic trick and say: â€Å"here’s your cover!†In particular, also, I do it to show to people how many cover designs go into a cover project for somebod y like Amazon. Sometimes I do 13 different covers before they decide on the one they like.You mentioned you’ve worked in the past for big publishers, but it seems that now you’re shifting a bit towards indie authors and getting more work from them, am I right?Yes, that’s true, it’s something that I’ve seen more and more over the last 3-4 years: with the rise of the Kindle people have started to write independently and publish via KDP or similar services. It’s been really different for me in the beginning because I usually never dealt with authors, and I realised I enjoyed it quite a bit. Sometimes they have really good ideas, or they just want you to do whatever you feel like, and I like that direct line of communication with people.And by working directly with authors you get more creative freedom, right?You know, I’ve often found along the years that the less I get paid, the more creative freedom I have! When people have larger budg ets they tend to have an idea of exactly what they want you to do. With smaller budgets, they’re more inclined to relinquish control of things and let you do what you want if the price is kept down. Of course I never use that as a way to do whatever I feel like, because I think it’s really important to hear what the author is telling me the want. I want to make sure that my work is something they’ll be happy with and will help them sell their book.Do you prefer working purely with stock imagery, or illustrations, or a mixture?That’s another thing that has to do with budgets in a way. I think there is a lot of inexpensive stock photography out there, so it is hard to convince somebody to spend more money on an illustration.I’m not really an illustrator, I haven’t done it for a living. I like to illustrate, but it’s one of those things where I have to prove myself to people before I get them to hire me, so I’m doing more smaller jobs that don’t pay as much just to get the experience and have something to show.I feel like with the surge of independent publishing and the number of books available having an illustration - something that is 100% unique - really adds value.I agree, and I’d say that the stock photography is not keeping up with the demand, so you start seeing the same photographs on different people’s books and that’s embarrassing for the author.I think people are starting to realise that you cannot just take an image and put your title and name on it because there is a very good chance that someone else is going to use the same†¦You work across all genres, I think, but is there any that you prefer working on? Or any project lately that you have particularly enjoyed?I like things a little more visceral, where there is more of a graphic edge. I think crime and horror are like that. I try not to emulate what people see out there and stay away from the typical horror book cover.But I do like to work on all things, even non-fiction. I have a few client publishers who publish more historical books, and those tend to follow certain contemporary trends in the United States politics. I do like working with archival and historical images.I also love working on poetry books. There tends to be a non-linear way to think about the covers that can work with poetry books, they’re not conceptual the same way a fiction book might be. I find it more interesting and challenging to work with an abstract idea. If you’re building a cover and you know there are certain elements that have to be on it, it becomes more of a production process than a creative one. My method of working is a little weirder and less straightforward than that.That’s good to hear, because a common piece of advice if you write in a particular genre is that your cover absolutely has to respect certain guidelines that are part of the genre. I always feel like as an author you might stand a better chance if you come with a different style for the cover, even one that doesn’t fully â€Å"respect† the genre.I would agree. Other people who write in your genre all have similar looking covers. So if I’m going to look for a book in that genre online, I’m probably immediately going to pick up the one that has a cover that doesn’t look like all the others.That said, it’s hard to convince people to do something different. Even publishers will say to me: â€Å"this book has sold quite a bit and it looks like this, can you do something similar?†. But the problem is that the public is smarter than that and after a while it is going to get bored.I think there’s only a small window of time in which you can emulate an idea and still be successful. The rest of the time you’ve got to try something different. It is a risk, and although people have to take risks, they usually don’t want to be the firs t one.

The two plays capture the struggles faced by women during this time. Males regard women in the plays with all the formulaic trappings in the setting of the rural American. Nevertheless, Glaspell and Hurston show women rarely fit the stereotype and should never be underestimated at all.            The society during this time had great influence on the way people lived, and could either liberate or oppress based on their standards of living. The society believed in the male superiority and women were oppressed and discontented with their lives. The women in the ‘Sweat’ and the ‘Trifles’ are alienated from their spouses as a result of traditional beliefs that dictate that women should be submissive, the males should dominate marriages, and the need of possessions to facilitate a happy marriage (Lupton, pp. 48).            The Sweat tells the story of a hero Delia Jones, who washes clothes for the whites in Florida town. She used to use the money she got to support her family (Hurston, pp.77). Nevertheless, Delia is married to an unkind man, Sykes. He is abusive to Delia, both physically and mentally. He has an affair with another lady and he uses the money earned by Delia to comfort his mistress. One day, he brings a rattle snake to his house in order to abuse Delia. Ironically, the snake kills him. As the play ends up the author makes the reader under that Delia does no effort to save the life of her abusive husband as he lay dying of bites inflicted by the snake.            Married women are unequally treated. They are required to do all domestic works and be submissive to their spouses. They are required to do things in order to please their husbands. Delia is abused by Sykes who physically beats her from time to time. As a result, domestic violence washes out the love between them. This is evident from the passive response of Delia when her husband suffers from the pains inflicted into his body by the rattle snake which he had brought into the house to abuse Delia. The narrator makes the theme clear by the reaction of Delia. Where there is abuse in marriage, suppressed parties will always want to revenge to the evil did by their husbands. Delia reacts with less concern about the pain her husband is going through as a way of revenging the abuse she has been going through the married life.            Domestic violence causes unfair treatment to the passive party. In the very beginning of the story, the writer makes the reader witness how women are used to attending all domestic chores. At this time, there were no employment opportunities for women more so the blacks. Nevertheless, Sykes is very unsympathetic to the needs of Delia who works for very little money in the laundry. He refuses to work and leaves his wife with all financial responsibilities. When Sykes tries to beat his wife, she says, Looka heah, Sykes, you done gone too far. Ah, been married to you fur fifteen years and Ah been takin in washing for fifteen years. Sweat sweat, sweat! Work and sweat, cry and sweat, pray and sweat! (Hurston, pp.89). This clearly shows that in families dominated by domestic families, the life is so unfulfilling to the spouse affected and there is no love for each other.            Marriages dominated by violence are subject to threats to each other. Sykes keeps on beating his wife and repeatedly uses threats such as â€Å"Don’t give me no lip neither, else Ah’ll throw em out and put ma fist upside yo head to boot. (Hurston, pp. 91). Ironically, the society knows what happening between the two spouses but they believe that what happens in marriages is too personal to question.            Domestic violence leads to unfaithfulness and hatred in marriages. The novel reveals that Sykes carries publicly affairs with another woman. To make the matters worse, he uses the hardly earned money by his wife to comfort the mistress. Sykes keeps on telling Delia that she is too thin and that his other partner is fatter, just to make Delia inferior to his mistress. One day as Delia comes from work she sees the two in a general store. Sykes publicly embarrasses her and says he has no problem with spending her wife’s hard earned money with his mistress. That very night she confronts her husband and the two confess hatred to one another. The author makes the reader understand that domestic violence is accompanied by hatred and misuse of one another. In the end, Delia revenges back in order to get the inner peace. When Delia is hiding in the hangar from the rattlesnake, Hurston writes, â€Å"A period of introspection, a space of retrospection, and then a mixt ure of both. Out of this an unpleasant calm. He wants her to respect the Sabbath day and keep it holy by not working. Delia tells him that her work caters for their home and wins them their daily bread. For instance, as Trifles opens, Henderson asks Mr. Hale to explain to him what happened. Mr. Hales responds by narrating a series of events which led to his discovery on murder, more so his conversation with Mrs. Wright, whom he found in the kitchenette with the body of his husband laying carelessly. He says, I was surprised; she did not ask me to come up to the stove, or to set down, but just sat there, not even looking at me, so I said, I want to see John. And then she-laughed (Glaspell, pp.37). The narrator makes it clear that Mrs. Wright never minds about the death of her husband as laughed at him when he demanded to see her husband. While the former is a dreamlike account of fantasy rule and the latter a pseudo-realistic travelogue, both works paint a picture of worlds that are not so perfect after all. These imperfections glitter like false gemstones in the paths of these Utopians’ religious beliefs, political systems, and philosophical viewpoints. Religion and spirituality reach into the depths of the human psyche and strongly influence a nation’s way of life. In Margaret Cavendish’s â€Å"Blazing World†, the Emperor and the inhabitants of the Blazing World worship Margaret, who renamed herself Margaret the First. Highly revered as a deity by the people, Margaret is surprised to discover that females do not have a high place in the religious fabric of the Blazing World. Women are barred from religious assemblies, because it is â€Å"promiscuous† for men and women to be together during religious worship, so women must remain at home to worship in the privacy of their rooms (Cavendish 1767). Priests and governors are made eunuchs to safeguard them from women and children who, according to Margaret’s advisors, make too much disturbances in the church and in the state. In Sir Thomas More’s Utopia, women priests are highly regarded. However, churches here are also segregat ed – the men sit on one side and while the women sit on the other. â€Å"It is far better to be trusted and respected that is to be liked.† In the story To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is told from a child’s point of view, a girl name Jean Louise Finch that goes by the nickname Scout. Atticus Finch, her father, is the lawyer defending a black man, Tom Robinson, who has been accused of a crime. This story takes place in Maycomb, Alabama around the 1930’s. Atticus Finch does not care about age, appearance, or even skin color. He is not afraid to be himself and he is the same inside the house as he is on the streets. As the story progresses, Atticus presents himself as kind, wise, and calm. All the qualities which make him an admirable and respected leader throughout Maycomb. First, Atticus proves that he is one of the kindest men in Maycomb. He does not yell or swear and he treats everyone how he wants to be treated. One day, when Scout comes home from school, she tells Atticus that her teacher Miss Caroline does not want her father to teach her how to read anymore. Scout loves to read with Atticus and does not want to stop, so she explains to him that she would like to quit school. Atticus really didn’t like that idea so he makes a promise with her saying that they can keep reading together as long as she stays in school. Rather than threatening to punish his daughter for even thinking of that idea, Atticus speaks respectfully to Scout. Atticus always wants his children to come to him for advice so, that they grow up being kind and compassionate towards each other. Atticus also shows kindness when he tries to make Dill, Jem and Scout friend, feel better. After running away from home, Dill hides under Scout’s bed, cold and hungry, and Atticus decides to help him. Instead of telling Dill to go home without food, he talks to Scout. He says, â€Å"Scout, we can do better than a pan of cold corn bread, can’t we? You fill this fellow up and when I get back we’ll see what we can do.† Later on, Atticus realizes that Dill has a difficult home life, and with his kindness, he looks out for him as if he was his own child. Being kind is a way to be respected, because if you’re mean and mad all the time people won’t even acknowledge you. Next, Atticus is considered wise because he is able to use things he has been taught toward his children and others in distinct ways. When Mrs. Dubose, the Finch’s elderly neighbor dies, Atticus uses her death as an opportunity to teach Jem and Scout a lesson. Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict who was dying of old age. She wanted to die clean of any drugs even though with her giving up caused her much pain. Atticus believes her decision shows true courage and bravery. He explains this to his children, â€Å"‘I want you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you even begin, but you begin anyways and you see it through no matter what.† Atticus respects Mrs. Dubose for her courage as much as Mrs. Dubose respects Atticus for his wisdom and good advice. Atticus thinks when Tim Johnson had shot that rabid dog that does not make him brave. Also, Atticus wisdom never gives up during the trial. During his closing statement he says to the jury, â€Å"A court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up. I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have heard, come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family. In the name of God do your duty.† Atticus was trying to remind the jury that Tom is a human being with a family. That was a wise way for Atticus to end his defense strategy at the trial, because his statement leads the jury to deliberate for hours rather than minutes. Atticus defending Tom Robinson was unacceptable in the town of Maycomb. People respected him because he stood up for what he believed was right. He believed that the court was the only place what provided equal justice but it didn’t. He had real courage to do something that other people were scared of. Additionally, Calm is another way to describe Atticus Finch. He never overreacts under pressure even in the worst situations. The day Atticus hears that Tom Robinson was shot, it was a horrible day for him, but he knew what he had to do. He had to stay calm and tell his family what had happened. Atticus explains the tragedy to Calpurnia, his cook, by saying, ‘â€Å"Depends on how you look at it. What was one Negro, more or less, among two hundred of ‘em? He wasn’t Tom to them, he was an escaping prisoner.† Atticus could have become angry with the guards that shot Tom, but instead he takes the time to see Tom’s death from the guards’ point of view. Staying calm is important, especially when dealing with someone who is unreasonable. For an example, Bob Ewell, the father who accused Tom of raping his daughter Mayella, is one of the meanest men anyone could come in contact with. Instead of being mature and talking to Atticus when he was upset, Bob decides to take his anger out on Atticus and spits on his face. Atticus controls his actions by simply wiping his face and walking away. He could have become mad but he maintains his self control. Atticus stays calm, even in the most difficult situations. That’s what makes him so respected by so many people. People doesn’t want a leader that over reacts or doesn’t stand up for what he believes. They want somebody that’s responsible and willing to stay strong in any circumstances. Throughout the Story, Atticus shows that being Kind, wise, and calm is the best way anyone can live his life and be respected. Atticus approaches the worst times with warnings and thoughtfulness while continuing to take care his children. Scout and Jem learn through their father that everyone makes mistakes and that resolving the problems takes skill and patience. Atticus’s experiences serve as important life-lessons for his children rather than situations too challenging to handle. His reminder to walk in someone’s skin rather than judging him teaches his children that all people can be misunderstood just as easily as they can be appreciated. People supported his actions and respected his courage. They just don’t have their own courage to speak up for justice. Atticus’s views towards the blacks in the community are not socially acceptable; however, so people criticize him for these bad choices or risks.
